West Hatch High School athletes put in highly commendable performances when they took on students from other local schools in the West Essex District Cross Country Championships.

West Hatch School hosted the race in perfect cross country weather.

PE teacher and head of cross country Aaron D’Silva said: “It was cold, wet and muddy but this did not hamper the pupils’ involvement and more than 40 pupils, from Years 7 to 11, took part.”

The gruelling event was well attended with other participating schools including Davenant, Debden Park and Roding Valley.

West Hatch students singled out for praise were Sami Shulton (Year 9) who was the Chigwell school’s only gold medallist, Maddie Fitch (Year 7) and Nikita Roberts (Year 10) who were runners-up and Amelia Skipper (Year 9) who finished third.

Runners will now look to be selected as part of West Essex for the January County Championships.
