Staff and students at West Hatch High School, Chigwell, have again come up with culinary delights, rivalling the stars of the hit BBC 1 show The Great British Bake Off.

The results of a weekend of baking were on put display in the school dining hall on Monday, not just for everyone to view but also to be judged for a 'Bake Off' House Competition.

Marks were awarded for the most improved House as well as for the Star Bakers from each House.

Guy Blain, Head of Austen House, said: "I was absolutely blown away by the standard this year. Imagination ran riot but alongside the creativity on display the level of skill was awesome."

The school has six Houses, each named after a famous person, and holds regular inter-house competitions.

On this occasion Brunel entered the most cakes, followed by Austen and both Houses were also judged to be the most improved.

Students Louise Bruce (Austen), Jodie Verghese (Brunel), Kacie Oliver (Fiennes), Henry Tozer (Newton), Nais Mohammed (Pankhurst) and Imogen Stevens (Roddick) join a staff representative from each House In the West Hatch High School Bake Off Grand Final.

Monday's event raised £289.60 for Great Ormond Street Hospital after the cakes were sold once judging was completed.

Headteacher Frances Howarth said: "We are very proud of the way our students work together to raise funds for a range of charities.

"Thank you to everyone who took part and helped behind the scenes - as well as to all the families that donated the use of their kitchens over the weekend!"
